Northeast Florida is booming and making room for new arrivals. New York’s Long Island is frozen in the 20th century.

Like many natives of New York’s Long Island his age, Jason Mueller, 23, lives with his parents. And, like a growing number of his peers, he’s making plans to pack up and move away. “There’s an exodus of my generation from Long Island,” Mueller says, citing friends who’ve left for upstate New York, North Carolina and Florida. “The No. 1 thing that’s keeping me from staying on Long Island is the housing costs,” he says.
