Melville, NY – On Wednesday, April 17, 2024, the Long Island Association (LIA)’s Energy & Environment Committee hosted a discussion with Doreen M. Harris, President and CEO of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). 80 members of the business community convened to get an update on New York State’s transition to renewable energy and progress with achieving New York State’s goals under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA). The CLCPA was signed into law in 2019 and mandates 70% of all of New York’s electricity is to come from renewable sources by 2030.

Energy & Environment Committee Co-Chair Rich Humann, an LIA Board Member and President & CEO of H2M, moderated a discussion with President Harris on topics including progress towards the CLCPA goals and Long Island’s role with the burgeoning offshore wind economy; the role of other renewable sources such as solar, electric vehicles, and hydrogen; and the economic benefits of the energy transition on the local supply chain.  Furthermore, topics such as energy efficiency and technological innovation were discussed, focusing on the importance of collaboration among residents, businesses, and government entities.

Matt Cohen, LIA President & CEO said, “The LIA supports decarbonizing our energy mix, and reaping the economic, environmental, and job creation benefits that comes with it. Long Island recently made history with South Fork Wind – America’s first commercial-scale wind farm and the first in New York State – and we will continue to play a leading role in our state’s energy transition. We thank President Harris for her time and insights at the LIA’s Energy & Environment Committee meeting.”
